Book Length: 236 PAGES

Publisher: Travis Luedke

The Sheperd Cover v2

Skate punks, kleptomaniacs, clairvoyant visions and reincarnation…

…THE SHEPHERD is unlike any other Young Adult novel you have ever read.

Mike Evans here. Sixteen year old skate punk squatting in a white-trash trailer park with my loser drunk Dad. Seems I lost most of my friends when Dad lost our home in foreclosure. Only Anita stuck by me. Worse, I keep having strange clairvoyant visions of things that always come true.

Then I almost ran over Nadia in my Geo. A passing truck finished the job – left a crumpled heap of skin and bone on the road. I fixed her. Me.

Now this fourteen year old girl won’t leave me alone. I sorta let her sneak in my window when she needs a place to crash.

I have a double life: daytime at school, Anita, skating, and then my nights with Nadia. She’s my secret friend, gives me money and listens to my problems when nobody else will.

My world is spinning out of control. Old friends have turned enemy, my grisly visions of death won’t quit, and Anita’s intentions make my head spin. Even with all that, I’ve got bigger stuff to worry about.

Nadia’s hiding something.

Advanced reviews:

“I could not put this book down. All I keep thinking about is what could possibly happen next. I felt as if I was back in high school with them!”
“It’s almost a love triangle of epic proportions or so you think….Travis blew me away with this book, I never saw what was coming.”
“Amazing, I loved Mike and Anita. The characters that I didn’t feel could redeem themselves did in ways I never thought possible. I loved the ending and so not what I thought would happen. I love the element of surprise.”

Sharp, witty, dark and gritty, The Shepherd is the must read YA paranormal thriller of 2013.

Interview:

I’m happy to bring you another interview with Travis, though this one will be distinctly less naughty than the last time! Following our interview, you can read an excerpt from The Shepherd and get an opportunity to win one of five eBooks!

Gen: Thank you for coming back to my blog, Travis! Last time we were naughty, this time we will be pure as the driven snow…or at least snow before we let the pets out. Ready?

Travis: Well, I have been known to do a little snow writing on occasion.  Come what may, I’m ready for it, pure or otherwise.

Gen: Is The Shepherd your first foray into young adult literature or have you written other ones?

Travis: Honestly, I had entertained the idea that Nightlife New York could be a YA novel. I discarded that idea after writing the first sex scene, at about chapter five.  So, yes, The Shepherd is truly my first YA novel, and it was a little bit difficult trying to tone down the perverse side of my nature.  But I have excellent editors, and they walked that tightrope with me, the fine line between teen and adult fiction.

Gen: Before we go on, try to squeeze a description of the book into one line, ok, maybe two.

Travis: 16 yr old skatepunk Mike thought he had big problems with his ex-girl and ex-best-friend slashing his tires and perfume-bombing his locker.  Then along came Nadia, nailed by a passing car on the highway, and nothing would ever be the same again…

Gen: You know I have this quirk where I ask my author friends to describe their characters as a flavor of ice cream. Go!

Travis: Ahh, Nadia is like pralines and cream, sweet and smooth, deliciously decadent, but then there’s a crunch that lets you know there’s something else in this recipe, and suddenly you’re not quite sure of the ingredients in your ice cream.

Gen: Ummmm, not sure why I find that hot and creepy all at the same time. Ha! Way to get me off task already, Travis.

Travis: *smirk*

Gen: Back to the interview, why Paranormal versus coming of age or other young adult themes?

Travis: This novel is really a combination of many themes and genres.  Paranormal, YA, coming of age, jocks vs. skaters, antisocial memes, the difficulties of single parent upbringing, dysfunctional friendships, mutually obsessive relationships, and loads of denial.  The paranormal aspect is subtly drawn, building with gradual thriller intensity.

And, I suspect I will always be a “Paranormal” author, that’s what I read, what I write, what I prefer in films.  It’s kinda my thing.

Gen: Oh, I totally get that as a fellow author. I’ve got a “thing” for cops and gangsters…don’t know if you’ve noticed…*wink* Ahem, speaking of, as an author what are your biggest pet peeves when writing in the young adult fantasy genre?

Travis: My focus is on realism of teen behavior and motivations.  Teens are a walking contradiction.  They are children in the bodies of adults, complete with raging hormones, newly emerging responsibilities, and a language and culture all their own.  Delving into the speech patterns and thought processes of teenagers is like visiting a foreign country, you can see what they are doing and saying, but you don’t really understand what it means to live there.

My own teen years were a wild ride of loose inhibitions, bad decisions and several hard lessons (definitely an adult novel–if I ever told that story).  But those were some of the best times of my life.  I think adult authors often get too absorbed in the idealistic portion of their YA writing and lose sight of the not-so-idealistic realities of teenagers today.

Gen: Fair enough, how about as a reader in the YA genre, name your biggest pet peeve and/or your favorite trope/authors/style.

Travis: Though I will surely create havoc with this: I really did enjoy the Twilight novels.  Despite enjoying them, I see the flaws.  Teens do drugs, get pregnant, skip school, lie and cheat and steal.  Where were those teens in Twilight?

For teenage paranormal fiction that really gets down to the gritty truth of that life, I think Holly Black and her Modern Fairie Tales series are phenomenal (Tithe, Valiant, Ironside).  Holly does a wonderful job of blending dark paranormal events with strong-willed teens trying to face challenges and make the right choices, often times making the wrong choices along the way.  Holly doesn’t sugar coat it.  She brings hard-hitting tales of teens coming-of-age while mired in the deadly underworld of the paranormal.  Gotta love it.  *grin*

Gen: Since it really has been ages since we’ve talked, what have you been up to these days? Writing, being a dad, menace to society, all of the above?

Travis: All of the above and then some.  I recently donated my body to science while writing another Nightlife Series novel, THE NIGHTLIFE LONDON.  I participated in a medical study, peed in their cups, gave them my blood, ate their almost-jail food, and caught a paycheck, all while writing intense scenes of sex and violence involving vampires, werewolves, Albanians, and Russians who drink way too much Vodka.

I live very vicariously through my writings, even when trapped in the bowels of a medical facility.

Gen: Travis…honestly! And here I was being all chaste and such in this interview, what with the “young adult” and whatnotness…*shakes head* Anyway, back on topic, I haven’t gotten a chance to read The Shepherd, my TBR list is embarrassingly long right now, but do you have plans to expand it into a series?

Travis: There have been some fans who asked for another book, and who knows, it could happen, but my plans for the next YA novel are taking me down a different road.  In 2014 I will write a YA paranormal thriller about a teenage girl who ends up in a tangled web of lies regarding the unintended consequences of identity theft.

So, I am definitely in the YA fiction genre to stay, and I plan to jump back and forth between YA and adult at my leisure, probably to the annoyance of my fans.

Gen: And I know you will rock the hell out of it, therefore, your legion of fans will forgive you anything. Thank you for coming by, Travis, if you’d like to take a second and grand stand for anything–seriously, anything at all–feel free to do so now:

Travis: If you’re looking for a gritty, witty, unusually realistic YA paranormal read, check out The Shepherd, it is not your mother’s YA novel.

If you’ve grown tired of the same old tropes in paranormal romance, and you yearn for the good ole days when vampires were violent, sexy, and violently sexy, then check out The Nightlife Series.  Can’t go wrong with vampires, escorts, pimps, cartel, and jello-wrestling…

Gen: HA! Outstanding! Ladies and gents, grab a copy of The Shepherd at Amazon . If for some reason you’re still not sure, read the excerpt that follows!

Excerpt:

Chapter 1

Thursday, September 9th, 5:15 p.m.

Shit happens, life happens, but for some reason it happens to me a lot.

I was kinda hoping life would give me a break – maybe crap on somebody else for a while.

Yeah, right.

I mean, look at Justin Shelby.  I’m sitting here in my car, in the McDonald’s drive through, and what is he doing?  He’s climbing up the side of the damn playcenter.  Probably faded on prescription pills he stole from his mom.  This guy is begging for life to hit him upside the head.  But it never does.

And then there’s his buddy, Tommy Schroeder, goading him on.

“Do it man!  You’re almost there!”

One of the wrestling elite of Moses Lake High School, Tommy’s mere presence inspired Justin to new heights of idiocy.  Justin scaled the side of the outdoor playcenter like Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible.

Justin skated religiously, a regular at the downtown Moses Lake skatepark across from the Aquatic Center.  Like most of us skaters, he was thin, moderately athletic, and had a strong sense of balance from endless hours busting his ass on the concrete.  Climbing the playcenter wasn’t any more dangerous than the skate tricks we recorded and posted to YouTube.

He quickly reached the apex, damn spider monkey.  He stood exalted atop the dome of the airplane-shaped plastic toy.  An elementary kid inside gawked up at him from the Plexiglas window.

“This is classic!”  Tommy whipped out his cell phone and started recording.

Looked like a good idea to me, so I did the same.  You never know what folly you might catch on video.  I mean, this was live action stuff.  I could be ten seconds away from a viral Youtube video, Gangnam Style.

Tommy encouraged Justin’s antics with loud catcalls.  Justin proclaimed his status as king of the hill, arms held high.

“Yeah bitches, hell yeah!”  Justin yelled and hooted at the top of his lungs, pumping his fists in the air.

I narrated to my potential audience of millions, “This is a flagrant violation of the rules.” I panned my cellphone camera over to the placard by the entry gate and zoomed in to catch a clear shot of the playcenter rules.  “There it is folks, rule number three:  No climbing outside the playcenter.  And we can’t forget rule number four:  No children over the age of fourteen allowed.  For the record, Justin is sixteen.”

Returning to the action, I caught Tommy’s upturned face lit with excitement, and then slid the view up the playcenter to Justin.  “There’s the big man, putting on a show for his new best friend.”

It kinda stung in a way I didn’t like to admit, that Justin was doing all this for Tommy.  A couple months ago, Justin was my best friend, my idiot.  Or so I had thought.

But Tommy was cool.  Popular and wealthy, he also happened to be one of the biggest arrogant pricks in my class, and Justin’s ticket into the ‘cool crowd.’

“Always trying to prove something.”  I shook my head.

Tommy and I don’t get along so well.  It’s a Rachelle thing.  One of those life things that happens to me so often.

I should just keep my mouth shut and catch some choice video, but you know what they say, the observer always affects the observed

“Hey ass munch, get down before you break your neck!”

Justin’s head whipped around to the sound of my voice, causing his body to sway with the sudden movement.  As soon as he spotted me parked in the drive-through a nasty smirk bloomed across his face.  In a moment of sublime inspiration, Justin dropped his pants with a show of lily-white butt cheeks.  He obviously hadn’t seen me recording with my cell phone.

Tommy noticed me too.  “How about a double McAss burger Mikey?”

He loves to call me Mikey.  He knows I hate it.  No one but Tommy calls me Mikey.

The girl delivering my cheeseburger held her hand over her mouth to cover her braces as she giggled and snarfed at the sight of Justin’s naked rump shaking back and forth while he taunted, “It’s a full moon tonight Mikey.  Hope you enjoy the view!”

Perfect.  Now Justin’s calling me Mikey.  God I hate that name.

“It’s Michael, asshole!  And thanks for the killer video.  Goin’ straight to Facebook.”  I held my cell phone out the window for him.

Justin looked back over his shoulder in surprise, attempting to pull up his pants at the same time.  The knee-jerk reaction caused him to lose his delicate balance atop the apex of the plastic airplane.  He fell onto his right side, and slithered down the side of the playcenter.  His hands shot out across the smooth surface, clawing, seeking a grip.  There was nothing to grab.

I watched him slide inexorably down the outside of the playcenter, pants and underwear still down around his thighs.  He tried rolling into position for a feet-first landing.  The maneuver would’ve worked if not for the fence being so close to the playcenter.  The bright yellow, powder-coated aluminum fence that had aided his climb to the top now blocked his landing on the way down.

Justin’s momentum came to an abrupt halt as he hit the top of the fence ass first.

I cringed and almost ruined the shot.  “That’s gotta hurt.”

Justin’s blood-curdling scream of agony made my skin crawl.  He sat there, squealing like a stuck pig.  The top section of fence tubing had impaled him where the sun don’t shine.  Pegged in the holiest of holies, he had two inches of aluminum post going in through the out door.

“Oh my god this is insane!”

I saved the ninety-three second video clip of Justin on my smart phone and posted it directly to my Facebook timeline.  I had a momentary twinge of conscience.  I mean, he was still crying, and Tommy was trying to climb the fence to help him.  It looked really painful.

“I can always delete it later …”

I was gonna call for help, but Tommy already had his phone out as Justin yelled in his face, “Call 911!”

I only had a few minutes to get to work.  As I drove off, I thought about taking that video down.  I probably should have.  But it only took fifteen minutes for my video clip to find its way to over 200 students at Moses Lake High School, shared over and over to dozens of Facebook profiles.  My first ever viral video.

I guess life happens to Justin Shelby too.

A bit about Thomas:

Thomas Author pic

I was born in 1957 in a small town in Western Pennsylvania that had – and still has – one traffic light. There wasn’t a whole lot to do there, and we had few neighbors, so I learned to play quite a bit of make-believe – soldiers, cowboys and Indians, that kind of thing. At the same time, I loved to read and watch old movies. On Saturdays, my dad played in a country western band, and I stayed up to wait for him. It was during that stretch that I discovered the horror movie. You know the ones I mean. Karloff, Chaney, Lee. The masters, right?

Fast forward 40 years. I’m now the project manager for a small civil engineering firm in picturesque Charleston, South Carolina with my lovely wife and four rescue pets, two dogs, two cats. Oh – and eight feral cats outside that put up with us because we give them two squares a day.

Anyway, since childhood, I’ve loved to create. I played trumpet, sang, even dabbled in genealogy. Nothing quite did it for me. Over the years, I’d composed quite a few term papers and theses (there are a few ex-teenagers in this world who owe their English grades to yours truly), and unfailingly earned an “A”. My wife knew this, and one day just suggested that I try writing.

What the hey, I thought. So I sat down and found a writing site called Hubpages. Nice little site, and I started getting the basics of writing a little from some of the inhabitants. I wrote a short story, and everyone liked it. So, I wrote another one. Except it kept growing, and I kept getting more ideas, and it lengthened to 20 thousand words, then 30, then 40. By the time I sat back, I had the rough draft of my first novel, except back then it was called “Werewolves and Flapjacks”. Somewhere along the way I decided to submit my work (now called “The Clearing) to three publishers. I was turned down twice, and miraculously was accepted by the gentleman who gently rules this site, Mr. Tim Taylor. And the rest, as they say, is history. By the way, you need to like Tim…he’s a great guy, and I owe him much, which can never be repaid.

I now have a second book availabe – “Restless Souls: 3 dark fables” – an anthology (novella and two short stories) of ghost stories, and life is grand.

Even though I make wise cracks about all of it, this is all like living a dream – and I don’t plan on waking up for a very long time.

ShadowsOfThePast

A little taste

Hayden was already a good distance from Brody’s dock when he heard the crunch of gravel near Brody’s dock. He turned and saw Amethyst’s hair from where he was, and ducked into the brush. He didn’t want to startle her, but he was curious what she was doing out there.

His breath caught as she pulled her shirt over her head and her high, full breasts bounced free. She hooked her thumbs in her skirt and slipped it off, leaving her bare. He was painfully hard from just a glimpse at a distance. The little nymph might just kill him if she got any closer.

She dove into the water. Well, that answered his question. He wanted to smack himself. That should have been obvious. Of course, lake plus nymph equals swim. He should have figured that out. Now it was too late to let her know he was watching without coming off like a pervert, which he now was because he couldn’t take his eyes off of her as she swam closer

Amethyst was at home in the water, and free of any inhibitions as she swam. He knew he wore a genuine smile as he watched her move gracefully through the lake.

Book Trailer:

Excerpt:

Ch. 5  Belle Notoriety gets the belt…

“Belle…I said have those papers on my desk when I walked in the office, so would you care to explain why I don’t have them?” Joseph’s tall muscular frame shadowed over Miss Notoriety as her heart became a war drum pounding in her ears.

Mondays were always a fist full of excitement around the law office of Mr. Switzer, and that Monday was no different

“I… Umm…I apologize, Sir.” Belle stammered over her words, his face now inches from hers, and her deep blue eyes stared into the dark abyss of chocolate brown. “My sister called, and I lost track of time. I’ll have them on your desk in less than fifteen minutes, Sir.”

“Not good enough.” Her head thrashed back with the hard yank of her hair. “Your sister is more important than your job, Miss Notoriety? Or more important than me?” He growled across her lips, and Belle could barely catch her breath before his lips crashed into hers, and she was devoured by the wolf.

He demanded her attention be given to his mouth and tongue, and Joseph’s free hand kneaded and pinched at her already hardening nipples. Each breast treated in the same rough fashion, and the kiss ended with a rush of air filling their lungs.

“Please Joseph, I’m sorry. Nothing’s more important than you.” Belle melted to the floor finding her knees, her chin tipped down, and her cheek brushed his outer thigh. She was apologizing, or tried too, before she was not so gently coaxed off the floor, and bent over her desk in the middle of the office.

Interview with @ObsidianPoet Shannon McRoberts #ASMSG |

Ordinarily on Mondays I feature a poem. Today, I am going to feature a POET who also writes Fantasy/SpeculativeFiction and is an artist. I think all these things go together quite well, don’t you? So, please welcome Shannon McRoberts as we discuss her series, Verses of Athine!

Verses of Athine Trial 3

Gen: Hi Shannon! Thank you for dropping by! First, where did the inspiration for Verses of Athine come from?

Shannon: I was sitting at home one day thinking about some stuff and looking for something to do when the idea of Athine, my main character, just popped into my head.  I personally think I have watched too many episodes of Xena, Buffy, and read too many Lady Death comics!

Gen: What is a one line synopsis for your book(s)?

Shannon: Take what you know about mythology and throw it out the window.

Gen: Now I’ve tortured you by making you reduce a series into a sentence, give us a more robust description complete with a genre or two.

Shannon: I hate putting myself into genre’s.  I just usually say Fantasy or Speculative Fiction b/c that is what it is.  The series is about Athine, an immortal born goddess, and her journey to figuring out her destiny.   Was she born to destroy the world or save it?

Gen: I understand, I hate having to smoosh something into discrete boxes, too. Why did you choose the Fantasy world versus others?

Shannon: I didn’t write my story with a genre in mind.  I just wanted to write a story with the elements I love.  Strong female leads, mythology, twists, and turns.  I guess fantasy just fits it best b/c I have always loved things in the fantasy world.

Gen: Do you have plans to expand upon the series?

Shannon: Yes.  Verses of Athine is actually the first 4 books.  I am writing the 5th one now.  I have about half of it penned.  Hopefully sometime soon I can finish it.  I have plans for a 6th one.

Gen: Which character is your favorite to write and why? (Yes, you must choose. There can be only one! Wait—wrong series.)

Shannon: Athine because she was the first character I created that I really have had fun with.

Gen: If you had to pick an ice cream flavor to describe your favorite character what would that be and why?

Shannon: Food analogy?  No, no.  We don’t eat books!  We don’t lick our characters either.  Well, maybe SOME people write about licking characters, but that isn’t what my series is about 🙂

Gen: HA! Alright, as I mentioned above, you are not just an author, you are an artist and poet (though a poet is an author in my mind). Do you find it hard to balance your time amongst these or do you just go where the moment takes you?

Shannon: I go where the moment takes me.  I carry a “writer’s bag” around with me for writing down ideas about story lines, poems, etc.  I also use my cell phone when I am in a pinch.  My fantasy art actually helps me write b/c when I make a picture of a character I immediately want to make the background or continue writing about that character.  It is almost like a writer’s block preventative for me.

Gen: What is your favorite type of book to read, or do you have one?

Shannon: I like a lot of different things.  If it has a story.  I have read anything from erotica to fantasy.  I’m not in a story for just blood, guts, sex, etc.  You have to have something to keep me reading!

Gen: Can you share a bit about what you are working on right now?

Shannon: Cursed Bloods follows where Verses of Athine ends.  It is the next in the Chronicles.  I am trying to write it where it will be longer than a novella.  I have about 26,000 words and I don’t even have all the chapters started.  I wrote an outline for this one b/c I had to do a lot of research on how the characters were related.  Isn’t it odd that an author would have to do research on her own made up world?  ROFL.  I wanted to avoid the pitfalls of someone going back and being like UHM NO, that isn’t what you said before.  I redid a lot of those “sticky” points in Verses of Athine and while new readers may not know it, previous readers of my individual books may.  I want consistency.  I have found that it is much easier to write with an outline where I don’t have to stop every five minutes and go back into another book for a minute detail.  Oh, and this book will expand on the vampires, dragons, and the N’Loron mythology.

Gen: What is your favorite music to listen to while writing? Is there a difference when you are in “artist” mode?

Shannon: I hate genres….I never can get the music or books I read into a genre.  I listen to a wide variety of artists.  Marylin Manson, Matchbox 20, Disturbed, Korn, Staind, Metallica, Evanescence, God Smack, A Perfect Circle, Tool, Brittany Spears, Selena Gomez, etc etc etc.  For artist mode I don’t usually need music, but I generally listen to the same things.  If I am going for a somber mood I may go for the sappy song or power ballad.  That reminds me I need to rip my Aerosmith and Kid Rock CD.    I have ADHD and for whatever reason I find that the music helps me focus.  Maybe it occupies my brain LOL.

Gen: You and I definitely share a hatred of boxing ourselves and our tastes into little genre/type boxes! Here’s to the eclectic souls! Now I’m going to take a leaf from our author pal Lucy Pireel and ask you to round this interview out by just blathering on about whatever. I thought that was fantastic when she interviewed me, so I’m doing it here. Go on and tell us whatever you want in this space, a rant, a self-promo, blathering nonsense, whatever:

Shannon: I recently started a new blog and new web page.  I have a newsletter on my blog 🙂  I also started uploading some of my pictures to Deviant Art to sell prints there.  At any given time I have a lot of irons in the fire.  I would love it if you went to my new website www.artistauthorpoet.com (also www.shannonmcroberts.com) and my blog at www.theobsidianpoet.com to browse.  My non-blog site has excerpts of all my books, links, and some art!

Gen: Great! Thank you so much for telling us a bit about yourself and your work, Shannon, I hope you’ll stop back by sometime!

Everyone please check out Shannon’s links!

TAIL OF THE DEVIL by Danielle DeVor

If Mathias thought being homeless sucked, being a vampire is worse. The vampires who transformed him believe he is the reincarnation of an ancient king. They expect him to quit swearing, use a napkin, and play by their weird, ancient rules. Screw that.

But after the reigning queen assaults Mathias, he has visions of a past life in which he was that king. Turns out the current queen killed him then, and wants to kill him again. He’d better grow up fast, because if he doesn’t his second life may be shorter than his first.

Excerpt:

You know you’ve been on the streets too long when the sound of an old man peeing in an alley reminds you of falling rain. Mathias stood, stretched his back, and walked out of the alley to escape the stench. He beat his hands against his jeans to knock away some of the grime, but it didn’t help much. Then, he scratched his head and ran his fingers through his dirty brown hair.

“Don’t think. Just move.” Mathias raised his head and looked past the tops of the buildings toward the sky. The sun was bright, a little too bright, but then it always seemed that way.

The early morning mist still crept its way around the feet of the buildings. It was a weightless sludge that looked like it was drifting from the river, but Mathias had never been too sure if that was where the mist was really coming from. It showed the city for what it really was: old, dirty, and worn. He felt old. Older than he was, older than he should be, and the way things were going, he’d be dead before long anyway. If he was lucky, he’d make it another year, but the way things were going, it didn’t seem likely.

His stomach growled. “Fuck.”  He patted his hands against his pockets, hoping to hear the jingle of change, but the only sound was the slight rustle of fabric against fabric. “Great, just fucking great.” Mathias grabbed his bag and ran out into the early morning throng.

Dawn in New York was like nowhere else on Earth. It was the one time of day when the city felt a little calm. In a few hours, that calm would disappear- replaced by a din that seemed as if it could swallow the earth if it chose to do so.

Mathias ran down the street, narrowly avoiding a wad of fresh gum on the sidewalk. When he could smell the salt in the air, he knew he didn’t have much farther to go. The docks stretched for miles. He walked past the fishmongers that were busy loading the day’s catch into crates. The smell made his stomach growl.

Standing a ways from the crew stood a man in a plaid shirt holding a clipboard.

Thank God. “Hey Mac!” Mathias yelled.

Mac was generally a decent guy. Kind of grumpy, but tall, and big. He wore an old red plaid shirt and a pair of blue jeans that had seen better days. He kind of looked like a lumberjack, just not as strong.

“Whaddya want, kid?”

“You got any work for me today?”

Mathias watched Mac rub his chin with ink stained fingers. “Not today, kid. Sorry.” He turned toward Mathias. “The order was light.”

Mathias’ shoulders slumped a bit. “Dammit, man. I could really use a job.” He shifted his weight to the other foot.

Mac nodded. “Tell ya what. Jimmy the Fish is supposed to be getting a big order sometime this week. Maybe he can help ya.”

Mathias nodded. “Okay man, thanks.”

Mac shook his head.

Mathias walked further along the docks. Go work for Jimmy the Fish. Yeah, right. Man’d sell his toenails if he thought he’d get anything for ‘em. It wasn’t like he had a choice. When you were well-fed, you had choices. When you weren’t…

Just before he reached Jimmy’s place, he ducked behind a crate. Dammit. He hoped they hadn’t seen him, or heard him for that matter. What he did know was that a black Mercedes and a man in an Armani suit holding a gun was bad news. Shit! His heart throbbed in his chest. Too close. Too fucking close. He knew trouble when it glared him in the face.

“Where’s my money, Jimmy?” Mathias heard a man say.

Oh, shit. Mathias tried to breathe, but it wasn’t easy.

“Tony, I’m sorry. I tried. I really did, but sales just ain’t been good lately,” Jimmy said.

Mathias could hear the fear dripping from Jimmy’s voice.

“So what you gonna do about it?” Tony asked.

Mathias could hear Jimmy begin to whimper. “I swear. I’ll… I’ll have it tomorrow.”

Mathias heard a couple of thumps followed by a howl.

“Yeah, you’ll swear all right, Jimmy. Nobody stiffs Mr. Plague. Nobody!”

Pop! Pop! Pop! A car door slammed. Then, with the squeal of tires and a rush of wind, he was gone.

Mathias couldn’t think. He couldn’t breathe. Suppressing a shudder, he distracted himself, randomly picking at a dirty hole in the knee of his jeans.

Come on. You can do this. He raised himself up on his knees and peeked around the crate. “Fuck.” Blood was on the ground like a dark pool. He scuttled back and tried to calm himself. Sweat formed on his upper lip. “Goddammit. I can’t move. Not now.”

He had no idea if there had been only one man, or if they were sending a so-called cleanup crew. All he knew was that he was witness to something he didn’t need to be a witness of, and that put him in a very bad position. The only thing he could do was wait and see if and when it would be safe to get away.

He raised the bottom of his filthy t-shirt and wiped the sweat from his lip. His legs began to cramp. He looked up at the sky. Where the clouds had been earlier, there was nothing but blue sky. “Why is it always this damn hot in August?” He mumbled as he stretched his legs.

The glaring sun beat down on the back of his neck. He didn’t think it could get any hotter, but he also really didn’t want to wait around to find out.

Somehow his stomach didn’t get the message about being quiet because it let loose a growl that was so loud, Mathias was sure that someone had heard it. And yet, nothing happened.

Interview with Danielle DeVor:

Gen: What is a one line synopsis for your book?

Danielle: Not quite one line, but one sentence.

Fifteen-year-old Mathias Drvar, homeless-teen-turned-vampire, must fight for his right to stay alive when the reigning queen demands a duel because she considers him a threat to her rule.

Gen: Why did you choose to write about vampires?

Danielle: I’ve always been obsessed with vampires. I started studying them when I was three by making my father read to me a book I’d found called Meet the Vampire, by Georgess McHargue.

Gen: Do you have plans to expand Tail of the Devil into a series?

Danielle: Right now, TotD is a duology. I may write more of Mathias in the future, but he will no longer be a teen, so it will no longer be a Young Adult story.

Gen: Which character is your favorite to write and why?

Danielle: Nossy is really a lot of fun. He does these wacky things just because he likes to irritate the other characters.

Gen: If you had to pick an ice cream flavor to describe your favorite character what would that be and why?

Danielle: Pomegranate. He’s obsessed with them.

Gen: You have another book coming out this fall, Sorrow’s Point. Can you tell us a bit about it?

Danielle: It’s about a defrocked priest who ends up doing an exorcism on a six-year-old girl.

Gen: Can you share a bit about what you are working on next?

Danielle: Right now, I’m in the middle of writing the second Tail of the Devil book. After that, I will be writing the third book in the Sorrow’s Point series.

Gen: Now some personal questions, What was your favorite part of living in Baton Rouge? Did it infuse your writing any?

Danielle: I liked being able to head down to New Orleans about every weekend. It’s only about an hour away from Baton Rouge. When I was down there, Anne Rice had already sold her house in the garden district, but I got engrossed in studying how the voudou religion works. There is some of that knowledge in Sorrow’s Point.

Gen: What is the biggest time drain in your life that takes you away from writing?

Danielle: Life in general. It is always kind of crazy at my house. I can be writing, and then there will be some sort of catastrophe that has to be fixed NOW! And then, of course, by the time I can get back to writing, my concentration is blown. 🙂

Gen: What is your favorite genre to read, or do you have one?

Danielle: It’s a toss-up between horror and fantasy. I also like murder mysteries.

Gen: Recently I visited Lucy Pireel’s website and she ended the interview with this: just blather on about whatever. I thought that was fantastic so I’m doing it here. Go on and tell us whatever you want in this space, a rant, a self-promo, blathering nonsense, whatever:

Danielle: I love MMA- Mixed Martial Arts. So far, I’ve only gotten to go to one UFC fight.  My favorite fighters are Eddie Alvarez, Jason “Mayhem” Miller, and Chuck Liddell. There’s something about two fighters going head to head using various techniques to take down their opponent. (It’s no longer a men’s only sport. Rhonda Rousey is an amazing athlete, and currently the UFC women’s champ.)

I have written a YA Thriller about a boy learning MMA who encounters a serial killer. So, I’m actually putting my fight knowledge to use. 🙂

Gen: Danielle, thank you so much for visiting my blog and telling us a bit about your books!

That’s it for today everyone!

Book Blurb:

Married life is hard enough, but when you add in aspects of owner/slave relationships, domestic discipline, BDSM, and Polyamory: life can get quite hairy.

Mr. Houston and his wife decided his intern, Piper Mitchell, would be a perfect addition to their “family” dynamic, and they hatched a plan to trick her into their bed!

Piper was set to babysit for them; Mr. Houston came home early, and she was caught red handed masturbating! He was just about to show her the time of her life when Mrs. Houston’s impatience got the better of her. Chad spanked his wife for her disobedience right in front of his intern. That’s when Piper discovered their ruse and the questions began to fly.

P.S. Mrs. Houston wasn’t the only one getting spanked! After a lengthy discussion, Piper agreed to a one month trial period of being their slave.

Sh*t just got real, and these three were ready for anything!

Delve into this threesome with your eyes wide open; you won’t want to miss a single “spankable” or “wankable”  moment!

Book Excerpt:

“Piper meet my wife, Melissa; this is my fab intern I was telling you about, dear.” He was mister calm, cool, and collected. I was just caught for the second time tonight; this time giving her husband a blow job, and she— well, she was gorgeous and none of the pictures on his desk did her justice, and all I wanted to do was crawl under a rock!

No such luck, the tall, leggy blonde was casually strolling towards the bed, while her clothes seemed to be melting away.

Holy shit! She’s going to join us???

“WAIT! Hold the fuck up!” I pushed my way up in their huge king-sized bed, and used the towel and a pillow to hide all my good parts. Meanwhile, Mr. Houston was laughing so hard he fell over, and Melissa still approached as if I had said nothing at all.

“This was all a plan? She’s not really out of town?” Stating the obvious was my specialty it seemed. I really should’ve stopped talking; I certainly didn’t sound as if I was top of my class at Carter Young University.

“Piper are you really a home-wrecker or isn’t it better that it was all a plan?” The now naked woman who could give Marilyn Monroe a run for her money sat right next to me on the bed and began peeling away the towel.
